LECTURES

Week 1:

Mr Kamal gave us a lecture about what we will be doing this semester as well as explained some theories that are important for 3D Animation.

Animation Principles
  1. Appeal
  2. Timing
  3. Spacing (slow in, slow out)
  4. Arcs
  5. Squash & Stretch
  6. Drag, Follow Through & Overlapping
  7. Pose to Pose & Straight Ahead
  8. Staging
  9. Exaggeration (idea)
  10. Secondary Action (add extra dimension)
  11. Anticipation
  12. Solid Drawing (poses)

Animation Process
  • Rough
  • Tie Down
  • Clean Up
  • Layout
  • Blocking (needs approval before polishing)
  • Polishing

Week 2:

FLUIDITY IN ANIMATION

Quality

  1. Fluidity
  2. Flexibility
  3. Clarity

Fluidity

  • Timing
  • Spacing > Slow in and Slow Out (graph editor)
  • Arcs

Frame Rate:

24 fps (film)

25 fps (video)

Keyframe

set keys

  • key
  • extreme
  • breakdown
  • in between

Arcs

  • must preview the arcs
  • using motion trail or motion path

N = sidebar

T = toolbar

1. Set the frame rate

SLOW OUT

SLOW IN

Rigging

Master Controller = to move/position/rotate/scale it around the space, the other rig controllers will follow thru

Week 6:

ANIMATION CLARITY

What is clarity in Animation?

- keeping your shot clean and precise, it could mean simplifying the movement of your character

1. Clarity in Staging
- the presentation of any idea so that it is understood and unmistakably clear
- an action that is understood
- a personality that is recognizable
- expression that can be seen
- a mood that will affect the audience

Fig 1.2: Clarity in Staging (12/5/2023)

2. Clarity in Secondary Action

- secondary action supports the main action and is always kept subordinate to the primary action

3. Clarity in Exaggeration

- if sad, make him sadder, if happy make him happier

INSTRUCTIONS

Exercises

EXERCISE 1: BOUNCING BALL

We are tasked to 3D animate 4 different types of ball bouncing.

1. Soccer ball
2. Ping Pong ball
3. Bowling ball
4. Beach ball

We learned how to use graph editor in Blender and also brushed up on timing, spacing, and arcs which we learned previously in Animation Fundamentals,

EXERCISE 2: PENDULUM ANIMATION

We were tasked to animate a pendulum object. We had to choose one between three given pendulums and showcase the animation principles of drag, follow-through, and overlapping.

EXERCISE 3: EMOTION POSE

We are tasked to download character rigs, understand them and create action poses based on four emotions:

1) Happy
2) Sad
3) Angry
4) Scared

This task helps us get used to the rigs and how it works for human models. Getting used to the model will help me later in the animation stage.

FEEDBACKS

Week 2

Exercise 1: Bouncing Ball
For the Bowling ball, it slides a bit at the end, try to add a bit of rotation. The Beach Ball timing is perfect. Mr. Kamal told me to make the ping pong ball smaller and that my soccer ball animation has good rotation.

Week 7

Exercise 3: Emotion Pose
Happy
Put some curves on the spine and the legs.
Sad
Make more downward curve to make it look even more sadder.
Angry
Make it more diagonal (forward and side). Good poses on the legs. Try to imagine on the side view as well. Lean the body towards the front leg. The fingers look clean.
Scared
Push a bit more to the left, to the side.  Make the on the same X line or make the back leg more bent.

Overall good, just need to work on creating that energy.

REFLECTIONS

I enjoyed this assignment and all exercises. It is not only a good refresher on using Blender, but it was also a refresher on basic animation principles. There were not many issues faced in finishing up the assignment. Most processes went smoothly and I even managed to follow the instructions given in class. I was most glad when feedback was given on my work so I can see what I can work on. My strength in these exercises that I observed was my keyframing and timing. While it is still something I can practice better, I am glad I did not have many issues with timing. Mr. Kamal's guidance and advice were most helpful in class. My favorite exercise would probably be Exercise 1 because it is something we've done before in a previous module, Animation Fundamentals and since I love 3D Animation, it was much more fun to do. Exercises 2 and 3 were also fun to do but I do believe there are some parts I could work on and tweak to be better. Overall, these exercises really taught me a lot about how 3D Animations work such as using rigs and keyframes as well as who I am as an animator.
