Fig 1.3: Shooting Exercise: Framing (9/4/2022)

In this video, Yi Yun, Metta and I practice shooting videos using different shot sizes. All the shot sizes are the ones above. Other than being fun, getting to practice them on our own had helped me understand how the different shot sizes affect the feeling you want the viewer to feel and different ways you can convey your message. For example, an extreme close-up shot can make the viewer feel very intimate with the subject, they start to observe the emotions of the subject in more detail and gain empathy while wide shots can help the viewer understand the atmosphere and the location that the subject is in.

Through this exercise, I better understand what the film industry would have the editors do and how the editors would have to trim the raw clips by following the storyboard made.

Short MV Video

The shots were:

Shooting Exercise

Week 4 (22/4/2022)

Our shooting day was scheduled on Wednesday 27/4/2022. In the group, my role is Assistant Director.

As per my role, I created the Shooting Schedule and showed it to Mr Martin for approval.

Week 5 (27/4/2022)

It was the day of our shooting session. We record a total of 7-9 scenes, 7 main ones and 2 extra bonus scenes. It was tiring yet there were many skills gained and things learned along the way. It gave us a glimpse of how a production team looks and acts like behind the scenes of every film. Personally, I was surprised to see how much time it took to shoot one single scenes and how many takes one scene could have due to multiple things. I knew I had to do my role properly to make sure each crew team was fulfilling their own role and helping the director build the perfect cinematography.

Here are some behind the scenes pictures:

Fig 2.5: Shooting Group Exercise - Unhappiness Trailer (19/5/2022)

I used the song Unhappiness by Lim Mi Hyun since it was also from the Kdrama - Happiness. It was a very fun group exercise and I learned a lot of things about the filmmaking process.

Week 7 (13/5/2022)

Mr Martin checked on our previous exercises such as the Music Video and Audio Editing 1.

Week 8 (20/5/2022)

We edited in Premiere Pro using the ripple tool. We edited a scene so that it would fall only under 30 seconds.

Fig 2.6: Week 8 Editing Exercise (25/5/2022)

Week 9 (27/5/2022)

We edited in Premiere Pro, the same clips in Week 8 but we had to do color correction.

FEEDBACKS

Week 7

General Feedback: Try out Premiere Pro presets to make your video look nice.

Specific Feedback: Mr Martin told me that my music video was well done. He said that our group was consistent in our style and art direction.

REFLECTIONS

Experience

Project 2 was my favourite out of the three Projects because we got to do many of the work as a team and everyone had different roles and tasks to do. It gives me a bit of insight on how a real film production team would act and look like. In this especially relevant in Week 5's Shooting Exercise where we shot scenes based on a korean TV series trailer. Other than that, the group MV shooting was both equally fun to record with my teammates and edit by myself. Editing music videos is one of my favourite things to do. Even though I need to brush up on my performance skills, I was proud of the music video we made together.

Overall, it was a valuable experience and I learned a lot from attending physical classes and having physical activities especially in this module where it is most important.

Observation

I observed that I may have struggled a bit in this module due to not having a good camera (my phone was ancient in this modern era). However, it did not stop me because I was able to use the cameras provided in campus and my classmates were kind enough to let me use theirs.

I also observed that I really enjoyed video editing but due to having a computer that cannot handle the programs well, it crashes easily. I have become a more detailed focused editor that will constantly make sure my video is rendered and saved due to this problem. Moreover, I observed that working in teams had developed my communication and social skills.

Findings

I learned that there are still many things to learn about filming as well as manipulating the frame size can tell a different message and story. Other than that, I learned that working with others may take effort and patience but can also help in generating ideas and speeding up the long process of film production. I also learned that we should use each other's skills to good use when working as a team and choose a task that you can do well in or learn from.
