Animation and I

What I love about animation & why I want to be an animator.

Other than being a source of entertainment, animation has been a part of my life since I was a kid up until now. Some may say that I have not grown up but people simply underestimate the power that animations hold. If you have the brain to think it, you can make it. Just like the imagination, the animation is endless. I love that animation can be a form of self-expression, a way to convey information, and a platform to tell stories.

In conclusion, I want to tell stories through something I love doing the most - art.

Sharing my favorite animation.

The defining moment in my life where I knew I wanted to pursue a field in animation is when I watched the movie Kimi No Nawa or more known as Your Name by Makoto Shinkai for the first time. I could not explain the emotion I felt and how amazed I was by the production of the film. I wondered how a 2D animated movie about two people falling in love impacted me so deeply when I don't have similar experiences as the characters. I believed it was due to the cinematography. The colors and camera angles that assisted the beautiful animation helped the viewers understand the emotions that the movie was trying to portray. The excitement of falling in love, the fear of life and death situations, as well as the sadness of saying goodbye to someone you care about. Makoto Shinkai managed to portray universal experiences through the lens of a teenage girl that lived in the countryside of Japan and a teenage boy living in the bustling city of Tokyo. The core of the characters may seem plain but the writing and story of the film develop them into real relatable people that have hopes and dreams. They long for someone, and they also get hurt.

Due to how deeply this film had impacted me, I dream to create a narrative, an animation, or a visual that despite coming from personal experiences, many others can share the emotion of the characters. They can be inspired artistically and learn something valuable from it.

Netflix's Love, Death, and Robots

VOLUME ONE

Three Robots

I really love this one, mostly for the plot but there is so much more to appreciate. Other than the wonderfully done animation, the cinematography really drives the episode into its greatness. The camera angles and colors of each scene manages to portray the mood and point that it is trying to tell.

Here you can see the way the cinematography introduces the character one by one, the first character stays in the middle to establish their personality of being uninterested in their trip while the other two that appears after, is excited. It shows a contrast between the two emotions of going on a trip. This scene also introduces the character in a way where it is straightforward for the viewer to recognize them as the main characters of the story. It also has a dark background reflecting the post-apocalyptic world they are in. It supports the animation that brings the characters to life in the way they behave by letting each character get a full-body shot. It establishes all the main character's personality and their group dynamic.

Week 2 [6/9/2022]

Class Exercise 1

Mr Martin told us to try out creating concept art based on the emotions, genre, and theme that we chose. It was to help us get used to create stories and to prepare us for Project 1.

Week 3 [13/9/2022]

Class Exercise 2

Similar to last week's exercise we had to choose a genre, theme, and emotion. However, this time we were to create a concept art based on one of the animated shorts that we had chosen.

Fig 1.3: Week 3 Class Exercise (13/9/2022)

I decided to create the concept art of the deer in the purple-themed fantasy land since the theme is nature and the setting of this place displays nature aesthetically.

Week 4 [20/9/2022]

We matched visuals to the description by character design and environmental design.

FEEDBACKS

Week 2

General Feedback: -
Specific Feedback: Your concept art, although simple, manages to convey the feeling of fear and joy in romance.

Week 3

General Feedback: Identify the type of animator you are and what type of animation will your story be.

Specific Feedback: Know what to let go, and what to keep. The antagonist of your story is the idea of leaving and separation. Make your audience fall in love with your character.

REFLECTIONS

The exercises done in class were good in helping me with the future three projects. I had a good time doing them since I was able to explore new ideas that were not related to my final but still a good practice for it. Moreover, it helped me look at inspirations and others' work for reference.
