INSTRUCTIONS

Final Project

We are tasked to create audio for a game using our own recording.  The video I game I chose was Ori and the Blind Forest.

Video Reference

I've never played Ori and the Blind Forest before so I watched gameplays, I also watched gameplays without music to better focus on the sound effects used.

From 10:43 to 12:14

Audio Storyboard

I listed down all the sounds I wanted to create and described them so that it will help me during the recording session later.

I also created an audio storyboard based on Mr Razif's recommendation. I observed the video to figure out the timing and better support me in audio editing later on.

Audio Journal

The asset list, the storyboard, and the production journal are all in the PDF below.

Process

For all audio, I removed the noise by using noise print capture and noise reduction. If the noise is still there I use Dynamics and Auto Gate.

1. Forest Ambience

I used the ambient sounds of my house at night and added some leaf rustling. There is a lot of plants at my house so I rustled the leaves to create that soft distant sound of leaves rustling.

2. Lake Ambience & Water Splash

I created a multitrack with a combination of sounds from my sink - water running and me splashing water in the water bowl. The same technique was used to create the water-splashing sounds.

3. Spawning / Game Save

From a recording I had noise reduced, a new weird sharp noise appeared so I decided to use it as this sound. I pitch bend it to make it sound more like a vacuum and that its charging up.

4. Tutorial Text

From recording my mouth sounds for the animal, I created a weird sound that fit the sound for a text to appear so I used it with a bit of pitch shifting and stretching.

5. Area Title & Life Shard

I also plucked the sound from recording rock/metal sounds. It went through a lot of pitch shifting. I increased the pitch to make it sound very sharp.

6. Walking on Wood & Scraping Wood

I tapped and scratched a piece of cardboard. I tried to record it by making it sound like footsteps so that it would not be hard for me in editing later on. However, it was still hard because either the character walks very fast or stops very often.

7. Jumping, Rolling Jump & Injured

Inspired by the original, I used my voice by gasping and sighing for the jump sounds. It sounded like that in the original with a little bit more of a swinging-a-bat sound but I was still satisfied with how it turned out. I make a higher pitch sigh for the injured sound.

8. Walking on Grass

I scrunched up a bouquet of old flowers so it sounded crunchy yet still soft like walking on grass.

9. Achievements 1 & 2

I strum some bass strings and put them through a lot of pitch shifting and pitch bending.

10. Green Plant

I used mouth sounds to replicate the squish noise when you step on the plant.

11. Stone Destroy & Boulder Drop

I walked on gravel and stone. I also scraped my shoes on it to create different stone crushing sounds.

12. Animal Noise

I voice acted the animal noises but lowered the pitch and stretched it longer because my voice could not go that low for long.

REFLECTIONS

For this project, I had a positive experience. It was definitely also a learning experience. Being able to use the studio and learn the ways to record audio for audio editing later was a huge learning experience for me. With that knowledge from class, I used it with me for this project. Using my dad's condenser microphone and creating studio space to record audio, I used my knowledge to record the audio needed. There were some challenges but mostly in the audio editing part where I had to go back and forth between recording and editing. From here, I learned that I need to streamline the process of audio recording for audio editing by describing the sound I wanted or having references. My strengths lie in observation and noticing details in the video given to notice what tiny audio details that need to be addressed and put in based on what is seen. In conclusion, both my strengths and weaknesses were put to the test with the project, and finished it with more experience and knowledge than I had before. Moreover, Game Audio design and the game industry are something I am genuinely interested in so I am happy to be able to use this opportunity to take a dip in my interests.
