Exercises
Exercise 1
Contrast
This design's message is about the loneliness of not fitting in. The
singular puzzle piece that does not fit into a world full of irregular lines
is used to portray this message. In the final design, I decided to have the
background white with grey lines to invoke the loneliness and emptiness
feeling of the image. In conclusion, the contrast is shown from its color
scheme and the contrast between the space that the puzzle piece occupies
versus the empty yet busy background.
Gestalt Theory
For the final, I decided to do the black and red color palette to have
a color contrast as well. There is no particular message in this design,
rather an interesting movie story or plot about tough mafias who are big cat
lovers. In the story, they willingly sacrifice their life for the Black Cat
which is (in this universe) a big underground mafia family that uses a black
cat as their symbol. The Gestalt Theory principle that I mainly used here
is Principle of Figure and other design principles that
exist in this design are contrast of colors and space.
Exercise 2
Repetition
Fig 1.2: Repetition Final JPEG (23/11/2021)
For the Final, I decided to keep the color monochromatic to reflect the
heavy message and scary feeling of being watched. Repetition is seen from
the repeating element of the opened eyes that create a pattern around the
two closed eyes that are the elements added to create variety and
contrast. It is to ensure the design stays interesting and has a focus. I
tried to make sure the two closed eyes are on the lines or intersection of
the lines following the Rule of Thirds.
The message behind this design is not everyone is looking at you,
criticizing everything you do. Most of the time they are in their own
world judging their own selves more critically. It can feel like you are
under the pressure of society's views but sometimes we can just close our
eyes and ignore it. Be in our own world and make the decisions that we
want.
Movement
Fig 1.3: Movement Final JPEG (23/11/2021) |
For the final, the movement is shown from the shape of the snake leading
the viewer's eyes to its head and also from the water splash. The design
follows the Rule of Thirds with the snake's head at the intersection of the
grid's lines. The reason behind this design is because I love snakes and
snake tattoos as well as the desire to express how beautiful snakes
move.
Exercise 3
Harmony
Fig 1.4: Harmony Final JPEG (23/11/2021) |
Based on Ms Jinchi's feedback of my previous draft, she told me that I
could use warmer tones to indicate feelings of coolness or calmness in a
design. With that, I made changes in the colors and used colors like pink
and yellow to add more visual interest in the design. I struggled with
choosing the right colors, it was very hard to imagine using warm colors
together with cool colors without them clashing or have a strong feeling.
This is my best attempt based on looking at colors in breath-taking
photography.
Thankfully, it worked out well. The design principles here are not only
harmony but unity as well from the composition of the objects - the mug and
the two smores.
Symbol
The feedback Ms Jinchi gave me about making it look more like a slap in
the face, gave me an idea on how to incorporate the chopsticks into the
idea of shark finning. The extinction of sharks have many causes, one of
them being overfishing. I tried to express this by having the shark in a
shark fin soup and caught by a fishing rod because of the high demand of
shark fins in the market. I used monochromatic colors and red to give an
impact, spread awareness of this issue and have a serious tone in the
design.
In conclusion, this design is a Pictorial Symbol that spreads a serious
message regarding the extinction of sharks due to overfishing and shark
finning. The design principles that exist are contrast in color and
unity.
Project 1: Self-Portrait
Fig 1.6: Project 1 Final JPEG (18/11/2021) |
RATIONALE
For the final, I made a self-portrait to which I title '?'. It is a
portrayal of my character and how I am a chronic worrier. I worry about
the past, the future and even the present of my life. I worry about what
I have and have not done. I never miss a day where I do not worry or
have questions fill my thoughts. I think that this trait is both a flaw
and advantage of mine that keeps me on my toes and continue being
productive. I have something to look forward to when I am thinking about
tomorrow. However, one should also be able to enjoy the present.
Other than that, it is also a representation of not knowing one's
self-identity. I do struggle with finding out what makes me, me. Is it
my interest? My personality? Different people will say different things
about me so who's judgement should I believe? My own? It does make you
feel like a stranger in your own body sometimes.
In this design, I paid more attention to color and the design style that
displays the message of the self-portrait. The blues and cool colors
represent my calmness and how I tend to seem calm despite overthinking
and worrying a lot. The bright and contrasting colors use of blue and
purple represents my expressive personality - how I am open to talk
about how I feel and love to share with people about happy things. Such
as these contrasting colors, it can be a little too loud and
suffocating. For my expression, my face seems unamused and blank, some
may say unapproachable. It is usually how I look when I am in deep
thought. Most people would say I seem scary at first glance. That is
usually not the case, as seen in the colors of the self-portrait, I am a
bright person that has a rich inner life.
Design principles that exist in this design are repetition and contrast
in the background. There is also emphasis with the color yellow being
the only warm color in the design. It highlights the main subject which
is my face.
Project 2: Sense of Place
Fig 1.7: Project 2 Final JPEG (18/11/2021) |
RATIONALE
For this project, when I thought of a place it reminded of a place
that holds a lot of beautiful memories - it was my kolej dorm in 2019.
I shared it with my close friend at the time and it made my 2019 a
much more enjoyable year despite the stress of the SPM exam. A memory
I cherished the most and want to base the design off is the
celebration of my friend and I's birthday. We have close birthdays
mine on 16th September and hers on 18th September. We shared a cake
that day and all our friends came to celebrate in our dorm since it
was the biggest room out of all of our friends' rooms (although it was
still quite small).
In the design, I wanted to share that joyous feeling of being with
friends and having them around to celebrate you! It comes of as a
little nostalgic with warm colors to display the warm feelings and
wholesome moment of the scene. The art style is more of messy brushes
with only slight rendering to symbolize me trying to remember this
memory despite it still being fuzzy and only the feelings are able to
be remembered. With that, the sense of place that I am trying to
portray from this design is the visual of the cake and its candle
glowing in the small room at night, giving the viewer the feeling of
safety and warmness.
The design principles that exist in this design is emphasis and
harmony.
Final Project: Visual Analysis
RATIONALE
For the Final Project, inspired by Guernica, I create a design piece that
documents the 'New Norm' of living in the pandemic as a Malaysian. The
simple color palette inspired by the popular Malaysian snack - Popo
Murukku Ikan's packaging was used to create more focus on the story and
events that take place that I feel many Malaysians can relate to. The
characters in the scenes are portrayed as happy and smiling to show that
we as a community have come to terms with the change and adapted to a new
lifestyle.
First, would be the man getting a delivery from Grub (a reference to Grab)
the delivery service that has helped many people during this pandemic
whether it be for getting food, groceries or even job opportunities.
Secondly, would the be the vaccination process where the two women (the
doctor and vaccine patient) are talking about the coronavirus, a popular
topic to talk about during this time. I also wanted to represent women in
this piece as well as doctors that sacrifice a lot of their time and
effort during the pandemic. Next would be the girl using her device to
open apps such as MySejatera (MySejahtera), Youtube and Netflix which are
the current apps that help Malaysians cope during the pandemic.
MySejahtera being the app that assists the managing of COVID-19 outbreaks
while Youtube and Netflix help families and individuals fill their time
with entertainment indoors. Last but not least, I wanted to represent the
students and employees who are studying and working at home that are
struggling to keep up or finding it hard to adapt to. While for some it
has been a blessing, I do believe that it is important to note that it is
not for everyone.
In conclusion, I hope this design is able to make Malaysians feel
connected with others in a sense that we all experience the same things
during this pandemic and that we should be optimistic for the future.
The design principle in this design are unity, harmony, symbol and gestalt
theory - Principle of Closure.
FINAL REFLECTION
I enjoyed most was watching myself grow and being able to create
designs I never imagined I could do myself. It was mostly thanks to Ms
Jinchi's efforts to always push me and see me improve. On the other
side, I did not enjoy most learning about the many problems I had to
work on throughout this module. To name a few, I had struggled with
color theory and design exploration.
This had made me learn new things about myself - the good and bad.
Despite struggling on certain things during the design process, I had
pushed myself and continue to make learn from the mistakes made. I
learned that I had difficulty with starting since I have too many ideas
and overcame it by setting time where I can just sit with a pen and
paper and just - sketch. I had also learned that I work best when the
work I make is personal or something I feel strongly about. Even though
there is pressure from myself, to make it perfect since it is something
I am passionate about, I learned that I have to be accepting of the
abilities that I have.
In my learning journey, not only did my work improved in quality as
well as my skill, I had changed in a sense where I was able to
appreciate design and art more, analyze what makes them interesting and
good then apply it on my own work. My design process had
changed.
As for the module itself, there is not much there is to change than
there is to keep. I would say the things to change would be minor such
as setting a list of names during consultation hours so that students
can be ready for their turn. I had always been surprised when my name
gets called because I did not expect that I had to go next. The things
that there is to keep is Ms Jinchi's consistent efforts to give feedback
when there is a chance as well as the flexibility to create any design
we want as long as it fits the theme.
In conclusion, I enjoyed this module greatly and do not regret every
moment spent in class and working on the projects. I would also like to
thank - again - Ms Jinchi and the classmates I had this semester that
were very supportive of my design journey in this module.
