LECTURES
INSTRUCTIONS
Task 3B: Type Design and Communication
For this task, we have to apply the knowledge from Task 1 and Task 2 to
express typographically a social message or greeting that is relevant to our
community or society.
From all the greetings, I chose Malaysia Day!
Visual Research
I looked at things that are related to Malaysia such as hibiscuses,
hornbill and the twin towers.

I also looked at designs related to Malaysia as well as sticker designs.

Sketches

Fig 1.5: Sketches (2/11/2021) |
I had three different concepts which were the flag, flower and calendar concepts which each have a variety of ideas.
|
Fig 1.6: Digitalized Sketches (2/11/2021) |
These were made on Photoshop to help me visualize them digitally and identify the dark and light tones of the sticker. I digitalize two of my favorite ideas.
Color Palette
|
Fig 1.7: Color Palette (10/11/2021) |
The colors here are basically the color scheme of the actual Malaysia Flag. Being deeply inspired from the flag, I knew I had to use these colors to evoke a feeling of patriotism and represent Malaysia.
Drafts

Fig 1.8: Digitalized with Colors & Black and White (10/11/2021) |
I made three different versions of the digitalized version with lesser graphics. I tried my best to showcase the feeling of patriotism and the spirit of Malaysia Day - a day where all of Malaysia is one and united. There is a lot of history in Malaysia Day I wanted to give the special day justice with my sticker designs.

Turning them into Telegram stickers was not too difficult. It was actually quite fun and I had made a Black and White sticker pack of the Malaysia Day designs.
Final Sticker
For the final I just made the letters be in all caps and moved the position of the Taylor's logo.

RATIONALE
Choosing Malaysia Day as a greeting I wanted to express in this task, I
used the Malaysia Flag to best represent the theme. I used its color
palette as well as illustrated the flag. For the type design, I used
Bold Condensed Gill Sans Std. and chose the word 'Malaysia' to be
emphasized in the sticker design. For the animation, I kept in mind how
I want the viewer's eyes to be guided in the sticker so I used
relatively simple animation to portray that.
FEEDBACKS
Week 11
General Feedback: Don't use or depend too much graphics and focus
more on the typography and type!
Week 12
General Feedback: The typography should be 3/4 of the
image.
REFLECTIONS
Experience
Task 3B was a huge learning process since new aspects of type design had
come into play such as color. I had a good time creating ideas for this
project, Malaysia Day is a special day for me since it falls on the same
date as my birthday - 16th of September. Because of that, I wanted to do
it right. A bit of perfectionism goes a long way for me. Although
struggled with some things, overall it was enjoyable and a good learning
experience.
Classes were fruitful and Mr Vinod's feedbacks were helpful in helping me
decide what direction I need to go towards. Looking at my classmates'
designs really inspired me a lot.
Observation
I huge thing I observed about me was that I have the ability to create
many ideas but have trouble with sticking at one design and moving
forward with it. This is a good thing to happen at the start of projects
because my brain juices will be constantly flowing, creating new ideas
and new ways to look at one thing. However, when it comes to completing
the final, I have a difficulty sticking to one idea because I do love
all my ideas equally.
This is where design principles come in where I have to logically break
down what makes a design better than the other and if they properly
portray the message that I want to tell. All these processes of logical
thinking definitely makes design something much more meaningful than a
simple inspiration in your brain. It is the act of carefully placing
building blocks and making many decisions to create an amazing final
product that fulfils its purpose.
Findings
I found that I underestimated how important it is to leave time to the
exporting and rendering processes of design. It took me a huge chunk of my
time to make sure my resolution and size of my work was correct. I also
struggled with Photoshop since it did not convert my animations into Gif
properly at the start. I applaud people that manage to export and get it
right the first time. I feel that another part of being a designer is
getting used to struggle of exporting work as well as being good at
organizing you storage space since design work takes a lot of space if one
does not regularly clean their storage.
Organization is an important part of a design process whether it be your
layers or digital files.

Syntax and Communication
Typographic Syntax
Syntax: the connecting of typographic signs to form works and
sentences on the page.
The letter
- individual letters are frequently combined into new
configurations
- combination of letters A and G are unified to create a stable
gestalt
- example of letter combinations acting as signs
|
Fig 2.9: Gestalt in Type (17/11/2021) |
- a typographic sign is visually dynamic because of its interaction with the surrounding void - the white of the paper
- form-to-void relationship is inherent in the totality of typographic
expression
|
Fig 3.0: Form-to-Void relationship in Type (17/11/2021) |
The word
- a word has the potential to express an idea, object or event.
- independent of the things they represent, yet by design they can be
made to signify and reveal their meaning
- optically adjusted spaces and consistent counterform relationships
assure the overall clarity of the union
- word-to-word interaction exhibits rhythmic recurrences of form and
counterform
|
Fig 3.1: Word-to-word interaction in Type (17/11/2021) |
The line
- words are joined from verbal sentences and typographic lines
- configuration and placement of lines of type are significant
structural concerns
- can be arranged symmetrically, or asymmetrically
- the reader must sense a clearly established relationship between
individual lines of type and the surrounding space
- smallest change in point size, weight, or line length controls the
overall emphasis given to a line of type
- typographic rules are used in conjunction with type and
separate one line of type from another or one group of typographic
lines.
